Set back(non programmable)thermostat-Best models and do they equals savings ?

A set back thermostat is basic type of non programmable thermostat that does not have programming feature. Instead the temperature set point can be altered only through manual operation. Traditionally they were mechanically operating only but now most modern thermostat come with electronic control.

These thermostats are inexpensive alternative to contemporary programmable or smart thermostats.

It is also suitable for people who have irregular schedule so require quite a lot of manual intervention.

Set back in temperature is the change in set point of temperature to allow the heating or cooling device to res or in other words run at lower load or not run at all.Basically the furnace or your ac etc will run only when the temperature falls below or rises above your setback temperature.

This will allow the system to use less energy and results in savings.

Basically there are two types of setbacks-

When the home is vacant-In this type you lower the load of your hvac equipment when no one is at home and so will not feel uncomfortable.

When sleeping at night-At night you can lower the heating or cooling as night temperatures are lower than day so you don’t need that much heating or cooling. This is called night-setback.

There are debates around whether setback result in saving or not.

Well according to physics it should. Any degree of setback no matter how small it is will save you money.

The amount you can save will depend on your commitment to save and also how well insulated your home is as well as the type of system you are using. A slow acting system will result in less saving while a well insulated home will also save more money.

Well US department of energy says that 1 degree of setback for 8 hours results can result in 1 % of energy saving.Well this may vary according to your system and insulation of home. The most important factor is your commitment to save energy and thus have regular setbacks for the long run whenever you are not at home or asleep at night.

Here is a simple chart of setback temperature and proposed energy savings.

Well you should also look into the time it requires for your system to bring the house back to your comfortable temperature and thus adjust you normal time in advance. You don’t need to bother with this in Smart thermostat with smart recovery feature like in Honeywell but with non programmable set back thermostat you need to keep that into account.

How much you should set back the temperature not only depends on the outside temperature but also on the humidity levels. You should find a best set point so that Relative humidity of house is in comfortable range.

In winter the RH may increases at night causing condensation at windows walls etc.

In summer too If your Ac doesn’t run less than required there may be rise in humidity causing moisture issues like molds etc in the house.

If you have heat pump you can save energy efficiently only in cooling mode when using setback. In heating mode a heat pump uses back up electric resistance heat system to heat back to normal temperature and set back will cause the heat pump it to operate inefficiently. A moderate setbacks will give you optimum saving. Few companies make thermostats with algorithms to minimize use of backup electric heat system. With such thermostat you can have much more setbacks and thus savings.

If you are looking for a non programmable thermostat chances are you have an old traditional furnace or cooling system or you have a irregular schedule so you don’t want to rely on programmable or smart thermostats.

There are basically three type of thermostats

Low voltage

Line voltage-120 to 240 V

Millivolt system.

When looking for non programmable thermostats check if its compatible with your system. In following we have listed more thermostats that are compatible with most of the systems and listed the one that are just for single system like Line voltage thermostats separately.

What is the Brown Wire on a Thermostat and Why is it Not Connected Sometimes?

Thermostats play a crucial role in controlling heating and cooling systems, ensuring comfort and energy efficiency. When examining thermostat wiring, you may come across a brown wire that is occasionally left unconnected. In this article, we will explore the significance of the brown wire in thermostat wiring and why it may be absent in certain installations.

Understanding Thermostat Wire Colors:

Thermostat wiring typically employs standardized wire colors, though variations may exist depending on specific systems or regions. The common wire colors and their functions are as follows:

Red (R): The red wire carries the power (24-volt AC) from the HVAC system’s transformer to the thermostat, enabling its operation.

White (W): The white wire controls the heating system. When the thermostat calls for heat, it activates the heating system, such as a furnace or boiler, through this wire.

Green (G): The green wire is responsible for controlling the HVAC system’s fan or blower. It triggers fan operation when the thermostat signals the need for air circulation.

Yellow (Y): The yellow wire governs the cooling system, typically an air conditioner. When cooling is required, the thermostat sends a signal through this wire to activate the cooling system.

Blue (C): The blue wire connects to the common (C) terminal, serving as the return path for the 24-volt AC power supply. It provides continuous power to the thermostat, eliminating the need for batteries in some cases.

The Enigma of the Brown Wire:

While the aforementioned wire colors are standard, the presence of a brown wire in thermostat wiring may seem puzzling. The brown wire, if present, is usually intended for connecting the thermostat to an emergency heating system or backup heating system. This auxiliary system serves as a backup when the primary heating system, such as a heat pump, fails to adequately heat the space.

However, it is important to note that not all thermostat models or HVAC systems require an emergency heating system. Consequently, the absence of a connection for the brown wire or its non-utilization is entirely normal. Thermostat manufacturers design different models to accommodate a wide range of HVAC configurations, including those without an emergency heating system.

In installations where the brown wire is not connected, it signifies that the thermostat’s HVAC system model doesn’t have an emergency system connected to it. This absence may be due to several factors, such as the specific HVAC system not featuring an emergency heating option or the thermostat model not supporting the connection.

It is crucial to follow the installation instructions provided by the thermostat manufacturer and consult the system’s wiring diagram to understand the correct wire connections for your specific setup. Misconnecting wires can lead to improper functioning of the HVAC system or even potential damage.

The Importance of Correct Wiring: Proper thermostat wiring is essential for the efficient operation of the HVAC system. Incorrectly connected wires can result in a range of issues, including improper temperature control, system malfunctions, and even damage to the equipment. Therefore, it is always advisable to refer to the thermostat’s documentation and seek professional assistance if needed.

If you are unsure about the wiring configuration or have any doubts, it is best to consult a qualified HVAC technician. These professionals have the knowledge and experience to ensure accurate installation and wiring connections, providing peace of mind and optimal system performance.

Conclusion: Thermostats rely on a specific set of wire colors to control heating, cooling, and fan systems. While the brown wire is not among the standard colors, it serves a crucial purpose in connecting a thermostat to an emergency heating system. However, if the brown wire is not present or left unconnected in your thermostat, it is likely because your specific HVAC system model does not require or suppor

t an emergency heating system.

When it comes to thermostat wiring, it’s essential to understand the wire color conventions specific to your system. While the standard wire colors mentioned earlier are commonly used, there can be variations and additional colors depending on the manufacturer or HVAC system.

In some cases, the brown wire may be used for functions other than connecting to an emergency heating system. It’s important to consult the documentation or wiring diagram provided by your thermostat manufacturer to determine the intended purpose of the brown wire in your specific system.

If you find a brown wire in your thermostat wiring and it is not connected, there’s no need to be alarmed. The absence of a connection for the brown wire signifies that your particular HVAC system does not have an emergency heating system connected to it. This is a common scenario in many installations.

Thermostat manufacturers design different models to accommodate a variety of HVAC systems, and not all systems require or support the use of an emergency heating system. Therefore, the brown wire may not be used or connected in these situations. It is simply a matter of compatibility between the thermostat model and the HVAC system.

It is worth noting that while the brown wire is commonly associated with emergency heating systems, other wire colors, such as orange or black, may also be used for this purpose in certain HVAC systems. Always refer to the documentation or wiring diagram specific to your thermostat and HVAC system for accurate information on wire connections and functionality.

Proper thermostat wiring is crucial for the correct operation of your HVAC system. Incorrect connections can lead to malfunctions, improper temperature control, or even damage to the equipment. If you are uncertain about the wiring or have any concerns, it is strongly recommended to consult a qualified HVAC technician.

A professional technician can accurately assess your system, identify the correct wiring configuration, and ensure that all connections are made properly. They have the expertise to troubleshoot any issues and provide necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency of your HVAC system.

In conclusion, the brown wire in thermostat wiring is typically associated with connecting to an emergency heating system. However, its absence or lack of connection in your thermostat does not necessarily indicate a problem. It simply means that your specific HVAC system model does not require or support the use of an emergency heating system. Always refer to the manufacturer’s documentation and seek professional assistance when in doubt to ensure proper thermostat installation and wiring connections.

What is temperature..!!

Temperature is property of any matter which tells the sensitivity of hotness that we will feel when we touch it. How ever it does not indicate how much total heat energy it contains. For example of same mass of water and coal at same temperature water has absorbed more heat because its heat capacity is higher. But since temperature is a property which is associated with average energy each of its molecules of the substance is having you feel the same sensitivity when either coal or water at same temperature is touched with bare hands.

From Maxwell Boltzmann distribution we see that as temperature increases the the curve tends to be more flat that means average energy of molecules increases with rise in temperature.

It is different from entropy(a measure of randomness of molecules). For example if water and coal are at same temperature and have same mass and absorbs same amount of heat, coal will undergo more temperature change and lesser entropy change ie energy distribution among their molecule will be less random compared to water. That means energy distribution among its molecules will be more uniform.

Mathematically E=H/T  and H=mCT Where E =entropy H= Energy And T=Temperature(Kelvin or absolute temperature) m=mass C=Specific heat capacity.

Entropy=(a measure of randomness of molecules). For example if water and coal are at same temperature and have same mass and same amount of heat is supplied to both, coal will undergo more uniform distribution ie, energy distribution among their molecule will be less random and average motion energy change per molecule will be more compared to water. That means lesser molecules will be at rest compared to water.

So conclusively, if heat is given to a substance and its temperature does not rises and substance does not do any work then it entropy increases which means less order so the whole energy given is not distributed uniformly among its molecules most of that given energy is concentrated among few number of molecules.

Now that you know much about temperature watch this interesting video.

Negative temperature

Now we know the entropy of system may increases or may remain the same. But what if the entropy decreases or the substance become more ordered. Such a substance is said to have negative temperature even though it has absorbed positive energy. For such a system to exist it has to saturate in entropy with probability of  higher states being small as illustrated with Fermi Dirac equation,

P(Ei) =n0(e–ΔE/kT) ,k=Boltzmann constant T=Temperature Ei=i^th energy state ΔE=Difference between two energy state no= Probability at fermi(base level) at temperature T. At zero Kelvin it is 1/2.

The probability(P) equation is for quantum physics by Ludwig Boltzmann. It is similar to Maxwell Boltzamn but instead of velocity, discreet energy states(A set of numbers defined by quantum physics. It has more to specify that energy state then the actual energy of that state.) are used .

At negative temperature there is a change in state or vice versa ie, due to the change of  state the system achieves negative temperature .

Such a system is employed in lasers where the entropy is lowered but heat is applied. But if this is continued to saturate the entropy it will transit to absolute temperature of negative infinity.

Negative temperature does not mean no absolute motion of molecules or particles but a change in its state.

To achieve absolute negative temperature in labs the systems is cooled near to absolute zero as illustrated in the video below.

Most familiar systems cannot achieve this temperature but if such a system comes in contact with normal system heat will flow from negative to positive temperature.

Such a system if stable is hotter regardless of its temperature than any positive temperature system and becomes a continuous heat energy source because of the change in quantum state of the system.

Best smart thermostats reviews and comparison

Hello! and welcome to my site.  I understand that when choosing from the different range of thermostat models available, it might be hard to find an ideal model. With short reviews, comparison and selection guide, we hope to help you find a thermostat that is perfect for your home and your budget.

A digital non-programmable thermostat temperature reading and setting on these thermostats are far more accurate and give you the convenience of easy to read LCD display.  The problem with these thermostats, however, is that one needs to remember to change them.  For example if you prefer to turn off your heater or lower it during winter nights to save energy, you will have to remember to do it manually every night.

Today’s programmable thermostats offer a variety of options, from displaying the home’s humidity level to showing you how much energy your system is using. You can choose models that will interface with your computer, allowing you to control the thermostat remotely. These internet-connected devices can even text you when it’s time to change your system’s air filter. Some even seem to have a mind of their own. Equipped with PID controllers, they record and process data, learning how long it takes to adjust temperatures in your home, and then automatically adjusting settings until they can maintain your ideal temperature within half a degree. These are generally called the wifi or smart thermostats but are essentially programmable thermostats.

Smart home thermostats

The idea of linking a home’s appliances, electronics and devices like thermostats together into a system that could be controlled remotely with a touch of a finger has an appeal that’s hard to resist. It conjures up images from the futuristic movies and television shows of the 1950s, that hopeful era when it seemed like full-home automation was just around the corner. In the 1950s, however, the technology that would make that vision a reality was still decades away.
Connecting a device as simple as a thermostat to a home automation system didn’t become feasible until the late 1970s when home-automation technology based on a home’s existing power lines began to become widely available. Most people viewed those early systems as not worth the trouble that it took to get them up and running. Then came WiFi.

The Introduction of Wi-Fi in Our Homes

Wireless (Wi-Fi) networks use high frequency radio signals to send and receive data within a limited area. Wi-Fi technology is ideally suited for home automation systems, making it easy to transmit video, sound and data to any part of the home up to 100 feet away without having to fuss with electrical and telephone lines.
How Wi-Fi Thermostats Work
It’s not necessary to install a separate Wi-Fi network to make a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat operational. Any home that has a high-speed Internet connection is ready for Wi-Fi home automation. The device that handles communication between the Internet and a thermostat with Wi-Fi is called a “bridge,” a device that looks something like a miniature stereo speaker. The bridge plugs into an open port on the computer’s router.
Works With Your Computer, Cellphone Or Tablet Device
It’s this aspect of Wi-Fi thermostats that makes some so ideal for the home. The devices can be scheduled to turn off a heating or cooling system when the family is away from home and turn the system back on in time for the family to return to a comfortably heated or cooled environment. With a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, users can either program the device using the controls on the thermostat or can use the software program’s interface to handle the programming. This allows for remote programming as well. If a family member decides to return home sooner than expected, for example, a few simple clicks of a mouse or taps on a cell phone is all that’s needed to adjust the home’s temperature quickly.

By allowing users to program their thermostats to adjust temperatures when they’re away from home, Wi-Fi programmable thermostats can cut up to 15 percent off of heating and cooling expenses. Multiple thermostats can be controlled by the same Wi-Fi system too. A broad range of other devices, including appliances, electronics, lights and security systems, can be incorporated into a single Wi-Fi home automation system, bringing the vision of fully automated home to life.

How to Choose Your Wifi Thermostat

Be sure to check that the wireless thermostat you are considering is compatible with the make and model of heating and cooling system you already have in your place. For example-the nest, the biggest contender in smart wifi thermostats market is not compatible with all of the home system.

Room Sensors

There are two type of room sensors. Temperature and/or  humidity sensors that can be used to wliminate hot ot cold spots in various rooms. And motion sensor that senses occupancy of the room or whole house and adjust the temperature similar to Geofencing. We have outlined both features of all the listed thermostats.

Battery Life

Battery life is a common issue with thermostat like nest. Firstly most wifi thermostat would not be able to run only with batteries because the battery will soon die out as it has to keep the radio signal on. So most wifi thermostats get its power from C wire and batteries are most of the time included for date and time update in case of power outage.

Humidity control

Not all thermostat comes with humidity control we have a separate list of smart thermostat that comes with humidity control. We have also outlines which of the above thermostat have built in humidity control, with Humidifier or Dehumidifer or AC.

Smart control features

Needless to say a thermostat with wifi comes with the setting to of 7 four times a day programming. But only extra feature you should look for is weather it is really a smart thermostat or just a wireless thermostat. By that i mean that a smart thermostat will have an auto schedule feature which will automatically set your future temperature setting by learning from your past temperature and the time of adjustments ,the current or future outdoor weather conditions like temperature and humidity level to adjust its controls. It can also auto adjust by learning weather you are at home or about to reach home(Geo-fencing).Some thermostat like ecobee comes with remote sensors that can monitor and control temperature at desired room in your house.Thermostats like hone well  that say it is smart don’t have the auto schedule feature but offers smart response technology that heat and cool before time by taking into account the amount of time it takes to heat or cool the system.Others models like nest have motion sensor for auto away feature that auto detects that you are in your home and starts to heat up,while when you are away it helps in energy saving. This is a different from Geo-fencing which uses your cell phone location.

Geo fencing

If you are going for wifi, Geo-fencing is something you can consider as by it you are basically adding to the wifi feature of your thermostat.Since you will be using you phone(Pc app as well) most of the time to control your home temperature, you can do so automatically by automatically sending your location through phone to your thermostat and by adjusting the range from your house in which if you enter or leave the thermostat automatically set the desired temperature of your settings. This can work for both if you routinely go out for work or otherwise require to go out anyway. But this feature is not always reliable,so do look more into this feature of your particular company models before making a choice.

Since the thermostat is wireless, it is possible that it could conflict with a neighbor’s heating or cooling system if they, too, use a wireless thermostat system. This is why most wireless thermostats come with a house code that matches it specifically to your home or business. To protect temperature settings, some wireless thermostats come with a password protect option so settings stay where you set them and cannot be changed without your permission.

Unique features

Lastly various companies add some unique capabilities of their own in their new line of models in order to compete. Some of which include unique energy saving and usage data and trend, latest Voice control like in Honeywell smart thermostat. Some wireless thermostats come with a large display screen that makes it easy to read and operate. Others come with a back-lit display for easy reading in the dark. Certain brands even carry display screens that have high resolution and look very professional. Others with special features such as screen savers night-hour dimming, holiday and nature themes, alerts, and the choice between either a digital or an analog clock.

Beating the Puzzle of Thermostat Wiring

Things You Should Know About Thermostat Wiring

Thermostat Wiring is a method of installing the thermo regulator in your house, office, car, or where else possible. It may be installed by yourself or by an electrician as you wish. Meanwhile, upon installation, the thermostat’s role is to primarily control the temperature by using its simple user interface with the internal workings of your home as well as its adjustable set point. It is used to regulate the desired temperature in a place. These are commonly used in no tropical places in America and in Southeast Asia to in order to ease the discomfort with the weather or climate. Usually, when the desired temperature is achieved, the systems get to be turned off while the expected temperature is delighted in.

All of this goes out the window if the person before you didn’t know or care to use the accepted color codes. Sometimes it is simpler to take down the existing wiring and re-terminate using the accepted color codes than it would be to map a “creative” wiring scheme.

The most basic of systems only need 2 wiring for control. They bond to a 2-string thermoregulator. The terminals in the label that are commonly ‘R’ and ‘W’ usually work at 24V. The source of this control electric power results from a control electrical device fitted probably just away from, or through the chamber body. The line voltage feeding the heater is turned down to reliable level of 24 volts. Then, after making a series of loops through at least one safety device, the power goes up to the Thermostat Wirings. In exchange with the room temperature reaching the desirable set point, it triggers the contacts to close. Thus, completing the circuit to the gas valve allowing it to open, the main burner to ignite, and begin the cycle of heat production by the thermostat.

There are also some common types of thermostat wirings where you can be able to find 3 or more wirings. I commonly has terminal with the 3 wirings ‘R’, ‘W’, and ‘Y’. This model, when selected for cooling and when it reaches the point above the set-point, the thermostat will close the connection between the ‘R’ and the ‘Y’ terminal. This initial process shall trigger the wholeness of the machine to start the cooling process. This provides the cooling for the evaporator coils built in the machine.

For further reading you can see this

The Continuing Cycle

When the cycle starts, the temperature of the heat exchanger arises as the fan blower motor starts moving air through the heat exchanger and takes out the heat through the ducting in your home. If, for any reason, the fan fails to run, it will be normal but dangerous for the heat exchanger to get too hot. This triggers the hi-limit temperature device to open to the gas valve, closing the valve and stopping the heating cycle.

Through time, climate control systems have evolved considering that the demands from our generation have vastly arouse. Today, thermostat units are more efficient, and have more features to boast about. No wonder, that the use of the old Thermostat Wiring technology have been long forgotten by most. Meanwhile, some people still are fond of using the old technology, this is good when the technology works real good for them but in some cases of unnecessary damages or malfunction of the machine, the pieces that need to be replaced are most often unavailable in hardware stores, that may lead for them to get to either purchase another old model or adapt with the machine that the new tech has to offer.

Thermostat Settings

  • Set the air conditioner’s thermostat not lower than 78°F during summer months.

  • By winter, set it to 68°F. This will help you minimize energy costs or expenses.

  • When adjusting the temperature on the thermostat, do it gradually to ensure that every family member is comfortable with the adjustments, especially if you have toddlers or babies at home. You can do this by adding or reducing the temperature a degree at a time in a week.

Most standard brands available today are Rheem, Trane, American Standard, Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, York, Amana and Goodman. Other Brands such as Maytag, Frigidaire and Tappan which are manufactured by Nordyne. Non standard brands such as Florida Heat Pump (FHP), First Company and Mitsubishi.

It is very important that you purchase the correct size system for your home regardless of the size you currently have. What I mean by that is, don’t just replace with the same thing you have now. It could be mis-sized and causing you problems that you are not aware of such as short cycling (causing humidity problems) or over working (shortening its life span).

Today’s systems are different in design then your older system. In order to achieve the higher efficiencies, they have installed a TXV valve which regulates the flow of the refrigerant. These keep the units from working inefficiently but do not allow for deficiencies in sizing.

The best way to properly size your new system is to have your contractor do a Heat Load Calculation also known as a Manual J. If not, as a general rule of thumb, 500 sq. ft. per ton of a/c living space for a single family home (example 2000 sq. ft. of a/c living space is a safe bet at 4 tons) . Factors may vary depending on exposure of home, how many windows and type, attached or free standing home, single story or 2, inadequate insulation in attic and leaking ductwork.

Your contractor should also check your ductwork in the attic to make sure it’s sized properly for the new system. Don’t assume or let him tell you it’s fine if he hasn’t looked (red flag).

Seer Rating:

Acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the SEER rating the lower your electric bill. Some utility companies offer rebates based on the SEER rating. 13 SEER is the minimum rating allowed by law and can go up to 21 SEER or higher depending on the brand. Keep in mind that the higher the SEER the more costly the equipment. For a single stage unit 16 seer is about the highest and probably the most popular now because of price.

Types of Central a/c systems:

Split systems, package units and water source heat pumps (less common and usually in high rise condos). A split system has 2 units, a condenser outside and an air handler inside. A package unit has both in 1 on the outside. A water cooled unit has both inside and is connected to a water source.

Single Stage vs. 2 Stage:

Single stage system is the least expensive and the more common system. It uses one compressor in the outside unit (condenser). A 2 stage system has either 1 compressor that changes speeds or 2 compressors that change back and forth according to demand. A 2 stage unit also has a variable speed air handler. The benefit to the 2 stage system is better humidity control, better air circulation and quieter operation. This system will keep your home feeling more comfortable over the course of a day because it adjusts to the changing environment of your home. Factors such as outside temperature, direction of the sun as it relates to your home and humidity will be compensated by this system. Also check your old thermostat. You might have to replace it and get a new one preferably programmable type that support your system.

Types of Heating:

Heat strip, heat pump, gas furnace. A heat strip is a coil in the air handler that heats up like a toaster. The air blows over it as it goes through the air handler. A heat pump uses a reverse cycle on the compressor to produce heat and can be supplemented with a heat strip for additional heating (used in cooler climates). A gas furnace gets its heat from natural gas and is used in colder climates.

Refrigerant Line Sizing:

These are the the copper pipes that carry the refrigerant (or freon) back and forth from the condenser to the air handler. There are 2 lines. A liquid line and a suction line. They must be the correct size according to the manufacturers specifications. Make sure that your contractor checks them to see if you have the right size for the new unit. Don’t assume they are correct even if you are replacing with the same size a/c. They may never have been correct. Under sized lines cause premature failure of the equipment due to low lubrication of the compressor and will lower the SEER rating that you are paying for. If a contractor does not check these (red flag).

Rule of thumb.

1.5 to 2.5 tons minimum size is 5/8 and 1/4 up to a 50′ run.

3 to 3.5 tons minimum size is 3/4 and 3/8

4 to 5 tons minimum size 7/8 and 3/8

Electrical Specifications:

Electrical wiring also needs to be sized properly. Don’t assume because you lived in your home for 20 years and your a/c has worked fine and you’ve never had a fire that it’s ok. Breakers also need to be sized properly. Again, don’t assume that what you have is right or safe. Make sure your contractor checks this without you asking. if not (red flag). Rule of thumb for air handlers

up to 30 amp breaker #10 wire and you can use a 5 kw heater

up to 45 amp breaker #8 wire and you can use a 8 kw heater

up to 60 amp breaker #6 wire and you can use a 10 kw heater

Rule of thumb for condensers

Varies by size and brand but wire sizes and breakers listed above are the same.

Manufacturers, Utilities and Government Rebates:

Manufacturers have rebates usually in the spring and the fall. The higher the price of the equipment, the higher the rebates (typically up to $1200). Keep in mind that the dealer absorbs half the cost of the rebate, so it gets built into the price to the consumer. Here is a link for state, local and/or utility incentives in your area Power utilities may also have rebates for repairing ductwork and replacing insulation in the attic. Federal Energy tax credits ended on December 31, 2011 but legislation is in congress for new tax credits.

Hiring a Contractor:

Your local power utility company may have a list of participating contractors for any utility rebates. Better Business Bureau is good if you take the time and check how many complaints a particular contractor has (too many and red flag). Angie’s list is also good. The best way to find a contractor is by word of mouth. Ask your neighbors, friends and co-workers. If they’ve had a good experience, they will surely let you know, if not then you know which contractors to stay away from. Get 3 estimates. If you do your research and call reputable contractors, then 3 should be enough. Too many will definitely get you confused. Make sure that they leave you a written estimate with all work to be done as well as model numbers and prices. If all these things are not on the proposal or if they tell you that they don’t pull permits for the job then beware. Most cities require permits even if your replacing with the same thing. This is to make sure that your contractor did all the work according to code and that your home is safe.

Honeywell Thermostat Troubleshooting – We answered each query

We received so many tiny yet crucial issues from the users of thermostat. We brought out best advisers to solve all the queries & do honeywell thermostat troubleshooting for our readers. Understand the solutions based on the type of thermostat you possess.

Honeywell is one of the leading thermostat manufacturing brand all over the world. It has a vast number of thermostat products available in the market and shops.

The brand manufactures and designs programmable, non-programmable, analog, digital, wired and wireless, etc. Thus there are various different models and products that belong to this company.

However, the main aim of Honeywell is to provide quality products to their customers and even offer them a wide range of features.

Yet, after all being an electronic gadget, some thermostat tend to behave improperly. And of course the company provides the warranty for their products but what if the device has any issue after the warranty period.

So let us go through some troubleshoots that are found commonly as an issue among many.

Basically, Honeywell used to design analog thermostat a decade or two ago. Later they made it digital, with a screen that can display the temperature that you have set as well as the room temperature.

Then they transformed those digital display screen thermostats into touchscreen gadgets which can just be managed by a single touch of your finger. And now they are going wireless for better, safe, faster and more efficient connectivity of the thermostat with other devices and are turning the home into a smart home.

So if you are having an analog thermostat then it may have some different issues as compared to that of the latest units. Now, as we all know the thermostat that you have in your house has the basic working automatic switch. This switch controls the on and off process of the connected devices.

Thus maintains and controls the heating and cooling units as well as the temperature. And if the unit is blinking then there is some issue in the thermostat.

Compressor issue: If you see a flashing light on the unit or any msg saying heating on or cooling on then it is the issue with the compressor of the unit.

And there are even seen issues such as device not operating properly or it is getting slower and dimmer than there has to be a problem in the battery of the thermostat.

This is because many units runs on the battery and when the battery is low the unit does not work properly due to less power available.

So it is recommended for all to have a regular check on the battery of the device so that you do not have to get it shut down any time unknowingly and unaware.

However, the analog models of the thermostat are very traditional formats of the device. Nowadays, there are smarter devices that can do a lot better than the analog ones.

Analog devices have very less amount of features compared to the present generation models. They just have basic functions and their buttons for switching off the unit, heating, and cooling.

Many thermostat models even display a message of Replace battery. This is helpful as you will not have to experience a sudden shutdown of the thermostat.

Check List:

  • Levelled to the wall

For an analog thermostat, if you are having a trouble you should check some basic requirements of troubleshooting. Firstly, the device should be placed on the wall such that the device is firmly attached to the wall and not inclined on the front or back side.

It should be perfectly vertical. If not done so, the mercury switch that is present in the device will also get tilted. And as a result of this, the accurate temperature reading through such thermostat would not be possible. So, it is essential for the unit to be mounted on the wall, perfectly leveled.

  • The height of the unit from the floor:

Generally, the manufacturers and the experts suggest that the thermostat should be located well above the floor. Around 5 feet high the unit should be placed on the floor.

This helps in keeping the device out of the reach of the kids and the other reason for this is there is no kind of obstruction to the device nor the device become an obstruction.

  • No corners or coverings:

The thermostat unit should not be placed in the corners or should not even have any kind of covering over it such as a cabinet, curtains, a photo frame or a closet. Such coverings do not allow the air to reach to the device properly.

Hence they become an obstruction. As a result, the gadget will not be able to measure the accurate room temperature or air humidity if it is not in proper and direct contact with the room atmosphere.

Troubleshooting Steps:

To make the analog device work properly you require doing few check steps so that you can fix the bug and start enjoying back your thermostat service.

  • Remove the cover:

The first thing you need to do is to remove the cover of the thermostat device. This will allow you to look into the unit for any kind of disturbance that has been created. As soon as you open the cover the first thing to do is to dust off of the dirt and corrosion from inside the thermostat. This will let you have a clear look at the problem causing entity. With the help of soft brush clean the unit or wipe it with a cloth.

Many times it is the dust and dirt that does not allow an electronic gadget to work properly. So, if this is the case then the unit should start working now on cleaning the dirt off.

  • Wiring:

The nest step is to check the wiring. You need to see whether the wires are properly connected at its place and there is no loose end in the unit. There will be different colored wires under the cover that should be connected to the terminals properly. If not so, check the manual and connect the correct wire at the significant place after going through the manual.

Check whether any of the wire is corroded or worn out and if there is any kind of short circuit that might have taken place. As many times there are cases where two unwanted wires come in contact with each other and cause the breakdown of the system.

But if all is in the place and nothing is worn out or misplaced then there might be an issue with the furnace or the air conditioner. So, get that check in case if they are the cause of the breakdown.

Digital gadgets with screen interfacing capabilities are the latest generation of thermostats that are being manufactured by Honeywell brand as well as other brands also. These units are high-end and chic with a bundle of features inside them.

A digital touchscreen thermostat has the number of features than a digital thermostat and a programmable one has more than all. These programmable devices can be scheduled and programmed for the upcoming days and have many other qualities.

But on the other hand, it is also true that there will be the number of problems if there are more features in a device. As the chances of an issue in a feature are more than the analog one, there should be proper troubleshooting for each possible case.

So let us see how these high-end gadgets can be troubleshoot using a perfect methodology so that you can have a look at the unit before you decide to call the service man to have a look at the thermostat.

  • No display on screen:

If your thermostat is dead or there is no display of information or any kind of light on the screen of your device then it may be probably a display failure. Many times due to certain reasons such as loosening of wire or short-circuiting of wires or due to battery problem of the unit (if it operates on battery) there are chances of the blackout of the screen.

However, in Honeywell thermostats, this is the most common issue that has been observed. The blackout of the screen. And due to this even when the device is working you cannot see or read anything on the display screen. This can be because of the furnace door.

If you have connected a furnace to the thermostat and haven’t closed the furnace door properly, then the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system) system will not work properly. Thus the thermostat will also not work properly.

  • Room temperature sensor:

When you open up the cover of the thermostat unit there you will see a thermometer that is used to measure the room temperature and helps to sense the atmospheric heat or cold. When this not working properly you will be having the improper working of the thermostat as well as other systems.

Yet to come up from that you will try to fix it somehow or would like to replace the thermometer or sensor. But the recommendation of the expert on thermostat is that you should decide to buy a new one. Instead of going for a replacement of the component buy another thermostat.

  • Short Fuse:

Another common problem that can be observed in the Honeywell thermostat units is the short fuse. Apparently, this is because of the fluctuations in the electric current. Due to the high fluctuations, the fuse of the thermostat and other devices may have got tripped or burnt (in some cases).

So if you cannot see through the display of the thermostat this might be the reason behind it. And to solve it, you need to go to the circuit breaker and check for the fuse of the furnace or the a.c. or for heating and cooling systems. If the fuse is tripped, turn off the switch first and turn it on again. If the thermostat starts working then congratulations! But if not then a replacement is required.

To replace it, turn the circuit breaker off and remove the old fuse and reinstall the new one exactly the same way as the first one was placed. However, it is recommended that you call a technician to do that as it is a risky job to do on your own.

  • Wiring Issues:

There are wires inside the thermostat, a lot of them to say. Each of the wires represents a different function and device and thus gets connected to various devices individually. And these wires are thus connected to the thermostat so that all the heating and cooling devices can be operated with the help of a thermostat.

In a Honeywell thermostat, basically, there are different wires that are labeled R, W, Y, C and G. This wired are connected to the device at one end and the other is being inside the thermostat.

The thermostat consists of differently labeled terminals for each of these wires, so it is essential for you to connect the respective wire and terminal. So, if any of the wire is not in its place then that is the most probable reason due to which the thermostat has stopped working.

Please turn off the power supply from the main circuit breaker before you proceed further.

Basically. the red colored wire is a main power supply wire of 24-volts that supplied power to the thermostat unit. The yellow one is for the cooling system and might be connected to the air conditioner (if there is one at your place). The white wire is for the heating device such as a furnace.

Whereas the green colored wire is used to connect the fan to the thermostat and the C-terminal wire is a common ground wire. However, if the all these wires are connected to the C wire then the thermostat powered by the a/c power supply and if not connected to C wire then it is a battery operated the thermostat.

Please take a note, you need to follow the thermostat manual that you have got with the unit as different units have different wiring and procedure.

So, it is strictly recommended for you to go through the manual if you have decided to do the problem solving on your own. This can also affect your honeywell WiFi thermostat.

There can be other reasons such as short-circuit or corrosion or worn out of the wire due to which the thermostat has stopped work. So you need to make sure that all the wires are in the good conditions and properly attached to the terminals with no sign of short-circuiting.

  • Day and time setting:

The thermostat even stops working if the date and time of the unit are not set properly. So before losing all the hopes and getting to the shop for the new thermostat please have the date and the time of the thermostat set again.

Many electric Honeywell thermostats do not work properly because their date and time are not set properly. As the programmable devices have the feature of Leave/Return and Sleep/Wake up, this thermostat will not work properly if the time is not set correctly.

To make all these features work on time you will have to go to the settings in the thermostat settings menu and reset the date and time. So, at night and the next morning the thermostat will be working for the Sleep and Wake up features.

If All Fails………

If there is an issue that we have not discussed then probably there might be a more serious problem with the device and the thermostat will require a deep study and check out and may take a replacement of few things or may need a complete replacement altogether. Thus if after all the above stated troubleshooting the thermostat does not come to life, then probably it is not the electrical issue it can be a mechanical problem in the unit.

And if it is to replace the components of the thermostat unit, it is recommended that you get a new one for yourself. Because the service and replacement will charge you equally as much as you buy a new one.

These were some of the troubleshoots for the Honeywell thermostat units so that you can get your device running on your own. But while you are doing so you need to be a responsible person with all the protections required. The troubleshooting of the Honeywell thermostat will get your unit back alive and then you can enjoy the service and pleasure that your thermostat provides.

The manufacturers are designing different types of thermostats so that you all can get the best according to the parameters and your requirements.

Generally, you won’t see a mechanical thermostat with a digital screen. They just have an analog indication through which you can read out the temperature on which the device is set.

So, with the help of different mechanical mechanisms brought together this kind of thermostat is formed. Only by rotating the dial on the device and setting it on the desired temperature marking the temperature can be controlled and adjusted in the desired manner.

Honeywell CT410B Thermostat is the best reviewed mechanical thermostat unit.

To follow the things in an ancient way you can have one such masterpiece home thermostat at your place. But yes it won’t be of much help as these are now outdated.

These devices were used just a decade ago and now with the inclusion of the new and advanced ones have taken their place.

After the use of the mechanical thermostat for some period of time and then the digital thermostat were invented. the digital models did not really had another extra feature rather than altering the temperature inside the house.

These digital thermostats can be programmable or non-programmable.

But in both the programmable or the non-programmable units there is always a display screen present on the device that readouts the temperature inside the house as well as the temperature outside the house.

Even the display screen can be a touch captive or a just a display screen, but both are under the digital thermostat segment as it consists of a digital display screen.

So, basically, this type of thermostat devices are the one which displays the conditions and settings of the unit in the digital format on the screen rather than the analog dial reading.

Honeywell TH3110D1008 Thermostat is the best non-programmable digital thermostat device that can work the temperature alterations very efficiently and precisely as compared to the mechanical ones.

The another basic difference between the mechanical and the digital devices are the basic working and components. One is mechanically driven while the other has electrical circuits and displays.

The non-programmable versions of thermostat device are the one which cannot do the programming. Of course, as the name suggests. But this does not mean they do not work.

Non-programmable thermostat units are the one which can do the required cooling or be warming the house. This is done by controlling various other devices but it does that without any kind of programming.

However, even with so many technological innovations that are being discovered and implemented.

And even with smart versions of the thermostats, the manufacturers are still manufacturing the Non-programmable ones.

Apparently, these devices just have a simple function and operation. You just can do the required temperature fluctuations as and when required. And this can be done by using the temperature increase or decrease button. And the temperature fluctuations will be seen on the digital screen of the thermostat. So, basically, there is no other great operational functioning or add-on feature to this kind of thermostats.

The best Non-programmable thermostat unit is the Honeywell TH3110D1008 Pro Non-Programmable Digital Thermostat..

This is the latest and most advanced form of thermostat device that you can get. Such types of devices allow you to schedule the temperature alterations for the upcoming week or upcoming days.

So basically, you are able to plan the whole up and down of the temperature, on and off of the device as well as other alarms and functions that the thermostat does, all can be pre-planned and programmed for the future.

This saves time and effort, and hence you do not have to go and adjust the device every now and then.

Essentially, programmable thermostats have different sensors with the help of which you can even set the turning on and turning off of the device.

With the help of such devices, it becomes very easy and simple to maintain a comfortable temperature in the house all the time.

You just need to do the programming, which is setting the temperature change for a particular time for a few days together.

Nest Learning 3 Generation is one of the top Programmable Thermostat devices that you can get from the market at present.

With all the advanced features and facilities that are available in this unit, makes the device a high-end gadget.

Earlier, the thermostat units were required to be wired with different devices that are to be controlled. But with the great leap in the field of wireless technology, all the devices are getting smarter and wire free.

Such devices are connected with the use of different wireless connectivity portals such as Wifi or Bluetooth and much more. But the most common connectivity is Wifi & the device is known as WiFi Thermostats.

So, now there are thermostats that are connected to another device such as heaters, furnace, air conditioner or dehumidifier and so on, with the help of Wifi.

So now you are free from the worries regarding the wiring and connection of all the gadgets.

Ecobee 3 is the best wireless thermostat. You have different sensors and different gadgets all connected to the main unit with help of Wifi connection.

So there is no concern or worries regarding the wiring issues. And thus the efficiency in connectivity increases in such connections.
