Trane Remote Energy Management Thermostat

Posted on September 17, 2015
Norwegian immigrant James Trane never could have imagined that the company he founded in 1885 would someday produce a thermostat that could interact remotely via cell phone or computer. The Trane Remote Energy Management Thermostat operates with the Z-Wave home automation system that allows remote control access to a slew of home electronic devices and systems.

For those with existing Z-Wave home automation systems, the Trane Remote Energy Management Thermostat offers all the functionality of the best 7-day programmable thermostats, with additional features like filter change and general maintenance reminders, all accessible from remote computers and cell phones with Internet capabilities.
The thermostat operates as a stand-alone programmable thermostat as well, making it a good choice for those who want functional features now, and the opportunity to upgrade to remote access later.

The intelligent Link system
Trane markets the thermostat for use with the Schlage LiNK gateway system, charging users a nominal monthly subscription fee. The system requires a bridge and appliance module to operate remotely. Other Z-Wave networks can also interact with the thermostat, making it easy for those with existing Z-Wave home automation to add the thermostat to the system, without having to pay the subscription fee.
The thermostat does not use batteries. Some consumer reviews reported difficulty hooking the thermostat up to their furnaces. Those familiar with home automation systems generally found installation easier.
Installation + Display Features
Trane offers installation services through their network of contractors, who will hook up the bridge and module, along with the thermostat, for you. A screwdriver and drill is all that’s needed for installing the thermostat itself. Oddly, manuals do not come with the thermostat and must be downloaded from Trane’s website.
Once installed, the unit is easily configured online with a few clicks of the mouse. Consumer reviews loved the user-friendly interfaces, both on their remote devices and on the thermostat itself. The pixel display is bright, clear and intuitive. Users especially appreciated being able to adjust the temperature remotely, whether from a distant location or from the comfort of their own beds.
