Intro

nttmHello! and welcome to my site.  I understand that when choosing from the different range of thermostat models available, it might be hard to find an ideal model. With short reviews, comparison and selection guide, we hope to help you find a thermostat that is perfect for your home and your budget.

A digital non-programmable thermostat temperature reading and setting on these thermostats are far more accurate and give you the convenience of easy to read LCD display.  The problem with these thermostats, however, is that one needs to remember to change them.  For example if you prefer to turn off your heater or lower it during winter nights to save energy, you will have to remember to do it manually every night.

Today’s programmable thermostats offer a variety of options, from displaying the home’s humidity level to showing you how much energy your system is using. You can choose models that will interface with your computer, allowing you to control the thermostat remotely. These internet-connected devices can even text you when it’s time to change your system’s air filter. Some even seem to have a mind of their own. Equipped with PID controllers, they record and process data, learning how long it takes to adjust temperatures in your home, and then automatically adjusting settings until they can maintain your ideal temperature within half a degree. These are generally called the wifi or smart thermostats but are essentially programmable thermostats.

Is it possible to save money using programmable thermostat ?

If you want to know ether it is possible or not to save money using programmable, the answer is of course it is.The correct question then is how and whether using a programmable thermostat is any advantage over a basic setback thermostat.
As with any machine it can only be useful to certain extent and its efficiency depends on the person using it.This is true even for modern smart thermostats. Here is a simple chart and proposed saving for simple household.
In general 1 degree setback (less in winter, more in summer) for 8 hrs result in 1 % saving in energy consumption.

Time 6am to 9pm9pm to 6amProposed Saving
Winter68°F (20°C)58(14°C)11 % (6°C/8hrs *15 hrs)
Summer78°F (26°C)96(36°C)18 % (10°C/8hrs *15 hrs)

Remember its your behaviors and motivation to save energy and ultimately energy bills that will be the real factor.A programmable thermostat can only help you achieve that goal.

Affordable Programmable non wifi Home Thermostats

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), heating and cooling costs account for about half of the average American household’s energy expenses. There are dozens of energy-saving strategies that you can employ to reduce your monthly energy bills, from turning out lights when you leave a room to adding insulation to your attic. One of the easiest, most effective and affordable ways to cut energy costs is to install a programmable thermostat.
Lower Your Energy Bills Up To 10 %
For a minimal investment, programmable thermostats offer substantial savings. You can save about $180 each year from these savvy devices, according to the EPA, or around 10 percent of your energy bills (many thermostat manufacturers claim higher savings than that – some up to 33%). Most units cost less than your family might spend on a dinner and a movie.

The digital thermostats display the current time and temperature. You flip through screen displays to program them. While you have the option to manually alter the current temperature at any time, savings come from careful programming.
Scheduled to Turn On & Off Automatically
You can customize the settings to fit your household’s schedule, automatically turning heating and cooling systems off when family members are away from home and back on again in time to ensure that the temperature is comfortable when everyone’s at home.
Most models let you set different schedules for weekdays and weekends, with several temperature changes each day. You can program them to lower the temperature at your usual bedtime and raise the temperature so that you wake up to a comfortably warm home.

Above is a list of best models at low prices. For higher end models you can better opt for a wifi embedded models. There are few things to pay attention to when buying your thermostat in this range.

Programming option.

The best programmable thermostat has flexible program settings.  One programming option is a 7 day program which allows you to choose a unique program for each day of the week with up to four periods per day.  This option is great for people with very busy schedules.  5-1-1 programming allows a person to have one setting for the weekdays and a separate one for each of the weekend days.  5-2 setting also allows for different programming options for the weekday and the weekend, but it is programmed for both weekdays together and not individually.  And finally, the one week setting, allows a different program for each week.  Especially helpful with those who travel often.

Compatibility

Make sure the thermostat you’re buying will work with your heating/cooling system because while most thermostats work with common cooling and heating systems, some might have exceptions. Also the heating and cooling stages in your home is crucial before buying your thermostat.Heating and cooling stage in your home can be determined based on the wiring labels in your home.Wire labelled Y is for air conditioner and the one labeled white is for heating furnace. If you have Yellow wire labeled Y1 and Y2 you have two stage cooling and similarly if W is labeled W1 and W2 you have two stage heating otherwise you have one stage heating or cooling. Most thermostat listed above have maximum 2 stage heating and two stage cooling. This is the maximum you can expect in this price range. Also check the compatibility for heat pumps. Most heat pumps have single heating or cooling speeds, but some have auxiliary compressor unit in case of cooler conditions. Most thermostats are compatible with one and some with two/multi stage heat pumps.

Higher/adjustable temperature swing for heating and cooing

Most digital thermostat comes with +-1 temperature differential. It means the thermostat switches on or off a HVAC device (AC or furnace) at one above or below the  set  temperature respectively .It is called the switching cycle of the HVAC device. Some thermostat like lux however have maximum +-3 setting by changing which you can adjust the number of cycles.Others like Honeywell allows you to directly define number of cycles. Controlling number of cycles is helpful because it  will reduce wear and tear of HVAC device by frequent switching ans also saves power bill because it is the at the start that a HVAC device ex Air conditioner draws the maximum power.Above list includes some models that have the adjustable switching cycle.

Auto Heat or cool mode.

We know that we can switch the mode to cooling(AC) in case of hot day/seasons and vice versa in cold days/seasons.But what when the temperature in not so predictable and there is higher swing in temperature in days and night(warmer day and cooler night). Some thermostats comes with option to automatically change mode if temperature remain above or below the set point for some time and the the selected mode HVAC device(AC or furnace) was not triggered on command. Not all thermostats has this feature but  those that do comes with a price.

Batteries

In case of programmable only thermostat with no radio the batteries can last for about one year or so and if it runs on batteries you don’t necessarily need to connect the C wire to the thermostats and vice versa. When used as a backup it will power the thermostat and save the program in the memory in case of power outage. But most models nowadays have battery independent memory. Most models will have  have replace batteries alarm showing months before it die out.

Temperature hold

All thermostat comes with manual program override called the temporary or permanent hold. When you put the thermostat on hold the temperature set point is given by you until you take the hold off. There is also a different vacation mode in which you can also determine the the number of days after which it will come on to its normal programmed schedule.Above list have mentioned whether the model has this feature or the normal hold.

Other features

Since there are a quite a lot of models and brands competing in the programmable domain different models come with unique features that can also be an advantage over others like easy  interface for programming and controlling.Furnace filter change reminder based on elapsed time,Screen with basic touchscreen, large display or back lights etc.

Wifi Programmable home thermostats

The idea of linking a home’s appliances, electronics and devices like thermostats together into a system that could be controlled remotely with a touch of a finger has an appeal that’s hard to resist. It conjures up images from the futuristic movies and television shows of the 1950s, that hopeful era when it seemed like full-home automation was just around the corner. In the 1950s, however, the technology that would make that vision a reality was still decades away.
Connecting a device as simple as a thermostat to a home automation system didn’t become feasible until the late 1970s when home-automation technology based on a home’s existing power lines began to become widely available. Most people viewed those early systems as not worth the trouble that it took to get them up and running. Then came WiFi.

The Introduction of Wi-Fi in Our Homes

wficnWireless (Wi-Fi) networks use high frequency radio signals to send and receive data within a limited area. Wi-Fi technology is ideally suited for home automation systems, making it easy to transmit video, sound and data to any part of the home up to 100 feet away without having to fuss with electrical and telephone lines.
How Wi-Fi Thermostats Work
It’s not necessary to install a separate Wi-Fi network to make a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat operational. Any home that has a high-speed Internet connection is ready for Wi-Fi home automation. The device that handles communication between the Internet and a thermostat with Wi-Fi is called a “bridge,” a device that looks something like a miniature stereo speaker. The bridge plugs into an open port on the computer’s router.
Works With Your Computer, Cellphone Or Tablet Device
It’s this aspect of Wi-Fi thermostats that makes some so ideal for the home. The devices can be scheduled to turn off a heating or cooling system when the family is away from home and turn the system back on in time for the family to return to a comfortably heated or cooled environment. With a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, users can either program the device using the controls on the thermostat or can use the software program’s interface to handle the programming. This allows for remote programming as well. If a family member decides to return home sooner than expected, for example, a few simple clicks of a mouse or taps on a cell phone is all that’s needed to adjust the home’s temperature quickly.

By allowing users to program their thermostats to adjust temperatures when they’re away from home, Wi-Fi programmable thermostats can cut up to 15 percent off of heating and cooling expenses. Multiple thermostats can be controlled by the same Wi-Fi system too. A broad range of other devices, including appliances, electronics, lights and security systems, can be incorporated into a single Wi-Fi home automation system, bringing the vision of fully automated home to life.

Here i have listed models which come with wifi. There are several popular brands of wireless thermostats available on the market today, and they are all competing for the consumer’s attention with special features and settings. Some of the more popular brands include Nest, Homewerks, Ecobee, Venstar, and Honeywell.with Each of these brands feature their own set of special features and settings, and not all of them may carry each type of feature a consumer may desire so make sure to check the above features when choosing your wifi thermostat.

How to Choose Your Wifi Thermostat

Compatibility

Check to be sure the wireless thermostat you are considering is compatible with the make and model of heating and cooling system you already have in place. For example the nest the biggest contender in smart wifi thermostats market is not compatible with all of the home system.

Battery Life

Battery life is a common issue with thermostat like nest. Firstly most wifi thermostat would not be able to run only with batteries because the battery will soon die out as it has to keep the radio signal on.So most wifi thermostats get its power from C wire and batteries are most of the time included from date and time update in case of power outage.

Smart control features

Needless to say a thermostat with wifi comes with the setting to of 7 four times a day programming. But only extra feature you should look for is that weather it is really a smart thermostat or just a wireless thermostat.By that i mean that a smart thermostat will have an auto schedule feature which will automatically set your future temperature setting by learning from your past temperature and the time of adjustments ,the current or future outdoor weather conditions like temperature and humidity level to adjust its controls. It can also auto adjust by learning weather you are at home or about to reach home(Geo-fencing).Some thermostat like ecobee comes with remote sensors that can monitor and control temperature at desired room in your house.Thermostats like hone well  that say it is smart don’t have the auto schedule feature but offers smart response technology that heat and cool before time by taking into account the amount of time it takes to heat or cool the system.Others models like nest have motion sensor for auto away feature that auto detects that you are in your home and starts to heat up,while when you are away it helps in energy saving. This is a different from Geo-fencing which uses your cell phone location.

Geo fencing

If you are going for wifi, Geo-fencing is something you can consider as by it you are basically adding to the wifi feature of your thermostat.Since you will be using you phone(Pc app as well) most of the time to control your home temperature, you can do so automatically by automatically sending your location through phone to your thermostat and by adjusting the range from your house in which if you enter or leave the thermostat automatically set the desired temperature of your settings. This can work for both if you routinely go out for work or otherwise require to go out anyway. But this feature is not always reliable,so do look more into this feature of your particular company models before making a choice.

 Security

Since the thermostat is wireless, it is possible that it could conflict with a neighbor’s heating or cooling system if they, too, use a wireless thermostat system. This is why most wireless thermostats come with a house code that matches it specifically to your home or business. To protect temperature settings, some wireless thermostats come with a password protect option so settings stay where you set them and cannot be changed without your permission.

Unique features

Lastly all different comes are release new line of models which have some unique capabilities of their own in order to compete. Some of which include unique energy saving and usage data and trend, latest Voice control like in Honeywell smart thermostat. Some wireless thermostats come with a large display screen that makes it easy to read and operate. Others come with a back-lit display for easy reading in the dark. Certain brands even carry display screens that have high resolution and look very professional.Others with special features such as screen savers night-hour dimming, holiday and nature themes, alerts, and the choice between either a digital or an analog clock.

Pros: This thermostat is very user friendly; I found it especially easy to operate as it seems to present the user interface similarly to many smart products. The installation process was much simpler than I thought it would be, but detailed directions made the step by step process easy to follow. It looks great in the modern, technology rich home. Its attractive, yet subtle appearance add a degree of sleekness and modernity to any house. The Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat provides the user the ability to control sensors and temperatures around the entire house from the convenience of a smart phone app. Being able to have several sensors located around strategically around the home add to the level of accuracy for the thermostat within the home. This improved level of accuracy leads to lower energy bills, fewer hot or cold spots around the home, and an overall more functional space. All of these facts help to increase the potential resale value for the home owner. The sleek design features of each aspect of the Ecobee3 package make this package that much more appealing.

Cons: The level of customer service provided by the manufacturing company could be much higher. Wait times and response times should be much quicker than what is currently provided. In addition, the tech support that is offered online also leaves something to be desired. When attempting to contact the manufacturer or the tech support that they offer, wait times are too long and hold times are not reasonable. As this is an accessory for the home, the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat does not always tie into an existing system without any issue. This device is also a piece of technology, so it is not always completely reliable. Just like any technological tool, the Ecobee3 can suffer some glitches which require interactions with tech support.

Feature wise, the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat stands apart from the competition, because it is so user friendly. Aside from the lack of support from a technical standpoint, the product is attractive, simple to install, and convenient to use. Although this is a relatively new item, it is apparent that it will continue to be a largely sold one.

In conclusion, this package is best suited for the home owner who is looking to improve the quality of air and temperature in their home in an aesthetically pleasing way. For the price, the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat is an excellent investment and one that comes highly recommended. This thermostat is unique in the fact that it is incredibly easy to install for any customer even if they do not have a great deal of experience. The ability to control the temperature from an easily installed smart phone app. only adds to the appeal of this exciting home improvement option. The subtle design only adds to the decor of any room in the house. Whether or not to add the Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Thermostat to any house should be a very simple decision to make. Commit to the change and appreciate the ease with which your home’s temperature is precisely controlled more every day!

Okay folks this page is a review of the Nest Learning Thermostat, a recent impulse purchase I made, yes I am a sucker for gadgets but a recently had some good fortune and was looking around for something to spend it on, as you do

Now when I first saw the price of the Nest thermostat I nearly choked as it’s a fair chunk of change to shell out for a device to turn your heating on and off, but being the inquisitive type I had to check this device out and find out what it can do compared to standard stats, and I have to say so far I am impressed with unit so I will share my findings here with you.

programmable-thermostat

Overview Of The Nest

First off this unit looks really nice and neat, not like the ugly square boxes most of these temperature control devices seem to be, this thing looks like it came from an Italian design studio. The Nest is also very nicely made, really good quality with a solid feel to it as you would expect for this money. The front is covered with curved glass and it turns really smoothly when adjusting it.

The display for the temperature is digital with very sharp white lettering and scales on either a blue, black or red background, this arrangement is very pleasing to the eye and really does make a normally mundane-looking object into a thing of beauty.
Also set in the display is a little green leaf that illuminates when energy is being conserved, more about this shortly. The casing is brushed stainless steel and once again the quality is flawless. So it looks really cool but how easy was the Nest to fit and program, lets look at installation first…

Installation Of The Nest Thermostat

Installing the Nest is simplicity itself for anyone with just a modicum of DIY skill, although if you are not comfortable playing with electrical wiring you are advised to get someone to do it for you, but it really is simple and no special tools are required. To do it yourself start by turning of the power to your heating system this should be a separate circuit buy if not and you are unsure just turn of the main switch in the fuse box or consumer unit. Remove the existing room stat from the wall label the wires so you know where they go.

Check Out The Current Price Of This Item On Amazon.com – And Look For Special Discounts

Remove the mounting plate for the old unit and then install the base plate for the Nest unit, once this is firmly in place push the wires into their locations, these are spring connectors no need for a screwdriver as there are no terminals. Once the wires are in place locate the Nest Thermostat onto its base plate and that’s it you are done. Turn the mains power back on.

In case you were wondering about leaving holes in the wall because of the different size of the unit you are replacing, don’t worry on this score as the Nest Thermostat

comes with a fitting pack that includes three sizes of plates that will cover almost every size of hole in addition to a special adapter plate to cover most standard electrical boxes.

If your old thermostat happens to be a circular one then this is even better as the Nest can be mounted directly on the wall and no adapter plates will be required.
With everything fitted and working now comes the fun part, and that is programming this little beauty.

SET UP

There is no real point in repeating to you how I installed my unit as your wall and fittings may be different but in any event every unit comes with easy to follow step by step instructions and there are many videos around to help you if you need it like the one on this page, all you have to do is follow them and you will be up and running in no time, they are not complicated at all and are a far cry from trying to set up the old mechanical units, the big difference with the Nest is that it will be connecting to the internet

You just need to enter a few settings like a name for the unit, as you may have more than one, some data to enter as regards what system(s) you are controlling, it actually ‘knows’ what is connected you just need to confirm. Your location by State and Zip code and the time and date, you may also want to set the maximum and minimum temperatures for heating and cooling when the house is unoccupied, although this is automatically set at default levels.

When all the data is set the unit will then generate a code for you which is then used to activate your online account. Once activated the unit will go through its activation cycle, this may take thirty minutes or so during which time it may appear to acting strangely and start switching things on and off again, once the cycle is complete it should then function normally. Written down it all seems rather complicated but it is a snap to set up.

Initial Programming Procedure

Well yes you have got to give it something to work with it’s not that clever, but this is super-easy because it’s done on your computer screen.

Obviously you need to set up a Nest account online, this is necessary for the operation and is where you enter the code the unit generated earlier, once this is done you are now connected to the unit and can begin entering your day to day temperature settings and timings. It sounds geeky but the programming screen is a grid showing Monday through to Sunday in rows and the timings in columns from 24.00 hours to 24.00 hours in intervals of 15 minutes.

All you have to do is highlight a day, click the add button on the bottom right this brings up a graphic showing the temperature in the middle. Drag the graphic to the Day and Time. Click on the up or down arrows that appear when hovering over the graphic to adjust the temperature. That’s all there is to it, one time and temperature event is added to whatever day you had highlighted, now just repeat this this operation for all the days depending on your own domestic arrangements, if any days have the same settings you can just copy them in required row. Once programming is complete the Nest will immediately become active and start following the timings you have set, you can change any settings at any time quite easily. The display on the screen is excellent and really easy to follow and see at a glance what’s going on.

Why The Nest Thermostat Is So Cool

After a few days the Nest can actually sense when the house is occupied. and so it begins to learn when the house is empty and starts adjusting the program steps accordingly, from what ever the original program settings were, it does this as a continuous process, so if your domestic arrangements change the Nest will change the heating or cooling cycles accordingly without you ever having to touch it or fiddle about reprogramming the unit.

There are sensors built into the Nest so if it detects someone standing in front of it then it will light up the display and show the ambient room temperature and what the program setting is. If On a heating cycle the background glows red, and if it has switched on the air conditioner or cooling fans then the background color turns to blue, if it is currently doing neither then the background will be plain black. The current settings can be manually overridden by just turning the dial clockwise or counter-clockwise to increase or lower the temperature of the house or room.

The Nest is just so simple to understand and operate even without any instructions, and far easier than some of the devices you may find in hotel rooms so if you can work those you will have no trouble at all.

After a few days the Nest can actually sense when the house is occupied. and so it begins to learn when the house is empty and starts adjusting the program steps accordingly, from whatever the original program settings were, it does this as a continuous process, so if your domestic arrangements change the Nest will change the heating or cooling cycles accordingly without you ever having to touch it or fiddle about reprogramming the unit.

Another cool thing the Nest does is connect to a weather forecasting site, based on your Zip code it uses current and predicted variations in temperature data to assist in anticipating what your heating or cooling system needs to be doing, for example if the weather is going to become suddenly cold it will turn the furnace or boiler on that much earlier than normal to compensate for the cold snap and try and bring the house to the programmed temperature at the set time.

pnap

But this device has another trick up its sleeve, because of the internet connection it is possible (using an App) to log into your account on the Nest website and view the current readings from the thermostat on a simple and intuitive web page, the current temperature in your house, whether it is heating, cooling or idling and you can also increase or reduce the degree settings as required, you can do this from any computer, iphone or Android phone that has the required App installed and you can of course use this facility while at home if you are really lazy!

Closing Summary And Customer Reviews

So in summary then if you like great gadgets although quite costly, The Nest Learning Thermostat is as cool as they come, and there is nothing quite like saying to people in the office before you leave for home, “It’s got very hot/cold I better just call my thermostat and tell it to switch the heating/air conditioning on early”

Right now these units are pretty expensive but I believe if they catch on then prices are likely to fall especially when the big companies get involved with the manufacture of the technologies involved, I just couldn’t wait because I love gadgets like this, and if you get one I’m sure you will too.

This is how all thermostats should be – easy to use, stylish, and control your systems without any further intervention, there’s no way I am going back to the old type after using this unit, this is a really useful item to have in the home, I love it and give it five stars.

If You are still on the fence read some more customer reviews here I’m sure like me you won’t be disappointed at your purchase especially when you start saving a packet on wasted energy.

I did plenty of research before buying but as usual found Amazon to be the cheapest for this unit, you might like to see if the Nest is on special offer here

Unlike many products that come and go The Nest Learning Thermostat is the recipient of many awards and has been recognized by some heavy hitters as one of the most innovative energy-saving products of this generation.

ecbL160_As far as heating and cooling components of your home go, there is literally nothing more important to your entire system than the thermostat control module that you decide to leverage. Luckily, the Ecobee smart thermostat full-color touchscreen unit is just that kind of control system, one of the most stunning both visually and control wise thermostats on the market today.

While this is certainly not the first or only touchscreen unit on the market today, it is one of the few reliable full-color screens at this price point, making it one of the smartest tools you could invest in. There are other backlit solutions that look nothing like this, which is closer to a cell phone or tablet interface than anything else.

One of the most important tools in your home is your heating and cooling system. Responsible for keeping us at a comfortable temperature throughout any weather or temperature shifts, we would be completely and totally lost without the ability to control our inner home environments. And while there are a number of different tools and technologies on the marketplace today that we can use to set our specific climate controls and determine exactly what our seating and cooling system does, one of the absolute best has to be the Honeywell touchscreen programmable thermostat. Featuring one of the largest displays in the industry, as well as the most clean and clutter free user interface you’ll find, this is truly the best of the best when it comes to programmable thermostat systems.

The first thing you’re going to notice right off the bat is the large crystal-clear display screen that gives you all of the information you need to understand just what’s going on in your home with a glance. You can forget forever about fumbling around with different dials, trying to squint hard enough to see exactly what your temperature setting currently is at and what the and the room temperature is, as well as which specific heating or cooling systems are running. Now you’ll be able to have instant access to all of your controls with the most eye-catching back-lit display in the business.

The specs of ‘Honeywell TH8320U1008 7day 3/h 2/c Vision PRO 8000 Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat’ are:

  • Manufacturer: Honeywell
  • Product Dimensions: 7.5×5.5×2.3 inches

And while the large display is truly the most stunning feature of the Honeywell touchscreen programmable thermostat, it’s the programmable part of the title that really demonstrates why this product is such a game changer. You’ll be able to schedule your heating and cooling systems over multiple days, literally allowing you the flexibility you need to establish exactly how your home will be heated and cooled at predetermined times for days and days in advance. This means you can set up your thermostat once a week, have it run to perfection according to your specific schedule, and never have to concern yourself with this problem again.

This is not to say that everything is hunky-dory with the Honeywell touchscreen programmable thermostat, as it can be quite confusing at first. But right after reading through all the instructions and actually tried it myself, all of the frustration flies right out of a window!

As far as thermostat controls go, there is literally nothing else on the market as good as this Honeywell touchscreen programmable thermostat, and it’s the perfect tool to control every single part of your home.

The Honeywell TH8110U1003 is incredibly convenient setting up. One fast reference to the manual is almost all you require to getting started programming this unit, as the user interface is very user-friendly and perfectly laid out right infront of you eyes.

It’s possible to program each and every day one at a time, multi-select days and review the programming without editing it.

A portion of the features the thermostat has are not active from the box and requires you to manually turn them on once you boot it up. (Note: A couple of customers/users have pointed out that they find this part a little bit annoying.)

Program It to Simply Save Money

The unit will enable one to have more control than in the past and allows you to keep the home at a comfortable level all of the time.

The changeover element is yet another smart feature of this Honeywell thermostat. It simply warms the home in the morning and cools it down during the day so that you will have the perfect temperature when you get home from work and at the same time you are saving money on your energy bill.

Another feature found handy on the Honeywell TH8110U1003 is a circulation feature on the fan. It will run the fan 35% of the time to maintain the air in the house.

If you may be planning about buying a new thermostat then you should really considering getting this one, you are surely going to be very pleased once you have it up and running.

  • – Screen looks great
  • – Very good budget thermostat priced right

Cons:

  • – Light on features, but gets the job done

The brand name Lux has been associated with clocks since the company’s beginnings in 1914, when founder Paul Lux worked as a clock maker. With such a timely heritage, it’s not surprising that many Lux products today feature accurate time keeping, digital time displays and timer options. The Lux TX9000TS Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat is no exception.

Touch-Screen Display With a Minor Issue

The Lux thermostat features a large, pale blue, luminescent display that not only shows the current temperature, but the current day and time as well.

A snowflake or flame icon tells you whether the system is in heating or cooling mode. The thermostat can be programmed to set your home’s temperature settings for the entire week, with up to four variable settings per day.

Lux boasts a user-friendly, touch-screen programming interface for its TX9000TS model. Some customer reviews takes issue with that claim, citing the interface as counterintuitive, using “yes,” rather than “enter” to switch screens, for example. Others lauded the ease of programming the system, saying they had it up and running in minutes, without consulting the manual.

(Click here to download the users manual for the TX9000TS)

Good Pre-Programmed Settings

Either way, you don’t have to program the unit to enjoy the Lux thermostat. The model comes pre-programmed with an energy-saving setup. Installing the thermostat itself just takes a screwdriver, a drill and a pair of batteries.

Simply install the thermostat to the wall, select “heat” or “cool,” and press the “reset” button to access the built-in programs.

The Lux thermostat does not automatically switch between heating and cooling. That’s an intentional feature. An environment does not need to be constantly heated or cooled to stay at a desired temperature.

The Lux model can easily be programmed to heat to a desired temperature in the morning, shut off, then cool to another temperature in the afternoon, saving energy and saving your money. It’s the reason that the Lux thermostat earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star label, and it’s the reason that the Lux thermostat can save you up to 33 percent on your energy bills.

The Honeywell RTH8580WF WiFi Thermostat is a major contender in the WiFi thermostat market. Currently the most popular unit is the Nest Learning Thermostat, but it is expensive. What if you want a thermostat that will do most of what the Nest does, but about a hundred bucks cheaper? Then the Honeywell RTH8580WF might be a good choice for you.

First I’ll mention that when compared to the Nest the RTH8580WF looks boring, but that’s only in comparison to the Nest. When not in comparison it looks quite slick. The screen is large, bright, and has an easy to use touchscreen interface. Long gone are the days of “just buying a thermostat” now they offer so many features that it can be hard to sort through everything. The Honeywell RTH8580WF is packed full of useful features and the most important one is possibly the WiFi. I bet if you’re reading this then it’s because you’re in the market for a thermostat with WiFi features. The RTH8580WF’s WiFi works flawlessly. It is a breeze to connect to your wireless network and the simple instructions explain how to do this. Once connected to a network you can use a free iPhone or Android app to control your thermostat. The apps are really nice and how they operate makes sense. Recently Honeywell added the ability to also control your temperature setting scheduling (lacking in a previous build). With the ability to control the scheduling you will have complete control over your thermostat from anywhere.

The Honeywell RTH8580WF 7-Day programmable Thermostat also has a feature called Smart Response Technology. This is a feature similar to the Nest’s  in that it can learn better when to heat and cool your home. Like with the Nest, this is hit and miss. Overall in my personal experience it worked like it should. There were a couple times that it made a decision it really shouldn’t have, but for the most part the experience was pleasant. Being in a bedroom and having the ability to turn your furnace up without having to get out of bed is a great thing. I typically keep my house cooler than most and this thermostat can learn that and adjust based on my scheduling.

When it comes down to it the Honeywell RTH8580WF 7-Day programmable Thermostat is perfect choice if you’re in the market for a WiFi thermostat or even a “smart” thermostat. The Nest is much nicer and with more features, but it also costs more. Maybe you want WiFi and the smart aspect, but can do without all the extra aesthetics, if so, then the Honeywell RTH8580WF is a brilliant choice and gets two thumbs up.

Note: Before installing make sure you have a 24V “C” wire. It will make installation a breeze.

If you are looking for a thermostat with touchscreen function that doesn’t use batteries then you will most definitely come to love the Honeywell RTH8500D.

(Note: It is able to run on batteries if your system does not provide 24vac power.)

This unit is equipped with every feature that you can ask for in a programmable thermostat.

The installation is really easy if you are reading the manual carefully and the thermostat itself looks great when mounted on your wall.

(Click here to download the users manual for the Honeywell RTH8500D)

The unit will automatically switch between the temperature range settings “heat” and “cool” meaning it’s not a hassle to set the perfect temperature range. Although, this function is disabled by default so you have to look in to the advanced options on the screen to enable this feature.

You are able to program each of the 7 days of the week individually with up to 4 different events (wake, leave, return, sleep).

Does What Cheaper Thermostats Can’t

One of the most intelligent features of this unit is the “recovery” mode which means that it learns how long it will take to either heat or cool your living space and it simply turns on the heater or air conditioner early so that it will reach the preffered temperature at the time you have selected.

The cheaper thermostats have a tendency to only turn on at the set time and the the temperature catches up to the program.
The RTH8500D always anticipates you needs, meaning if you want it to be 73 degrees when waking up at 8:00 then simply set the wake-up event to 73 degrees at 8:00. This thermostat takes care of the rest.

Perhaps more than any other company, household thermostats are most commonly associated with Honeywell, the brand whose history reaches back to the invention of a coal thermostat in 1855. Honeywell’s line of 7-day programmable thermostats continues that tradition, providing the convenience of pre-set temperatures for every day of the week.

The Honeywell RTH7500D Conventional 7-Day Programmable Thermostat was designed specifically for homeowners who prefer push button controls, rather than touch screen technology. The model is also priced slightly lower than its touch screen counterparts. All of Honeywell’s 7-day models allow users to program four settings for every day of the week, with terminology – wake, leave, return and sleep – that guide you through the process.

(Click here to download the users manual for the RTH7500D)

Installation – Pros and Cons

Honeywell thermostats can be used with a variety of heating and cooling systems, but some consumer reviews cited trouble in determining the wiring configuration with atypical installations. The product comes with stickers to help identify which wire goes where. Programming the thermostat is fairly easy, and the manual guides you through any confusion in terminology.

The RTH7500D model has an “automatic” option that allows you to set a single temperature that the system will then maintain, switching from cooling to heating systems as needed. It’s a handy option when you’re home all day, and it can be toggled off when you’re not.

User-Friendly Button Interface

Many homeowners will find the button interfaces more user-friendly than those with touch screens. The buttons ensure you won’t accidentally hit the wrong setting. To conserve the batteries, the display remains in “dim” mode until a button is pressed, which triggers the backlight.

The display itself is clear and concise, showing the current temperature, your pre-set temperature, the current time and three options for turning on the fan, setting the clock and for bringing up the scheduling menu. Up/down push buttons to the side make adjusting the temperature simple, even in the dark.
